Picnic Table

Come join us this summer for a barbecue in our back yard! We’d love to share our new (and first) picnic table with you!
If I had asked you to guess where we ate more meals outside – in the Philippines or England, what would your answer be? Would your 1st thought be the tropics or ‘rainy England’?
Believe it or not, it is here in England. One reason being it was usually too hot in the tropics, as well as too many bugs. The other being, contrary to all the stories we heard before we moved here, of ‘foggy England’ our experience has been quite the opposite. We have enjoyed tons of bright blue skies and lovely temperatures – the perfect atmosphere for eating outside.
We had often thought it would be great to have a picnic table and enjoy our evening meals in our back yard. It would be good especially when friends are here with small kids. They could run and play – we could sit and enjoy. Each summer we would say we would wait until autumn when they would go on sale. Each autumn we would wait too long and soon the garden centers would be full of Christmas trees! We were waiting too long for the perfect sale.
A gift at Christmas time solved those problems - a cute drawing of a picnic table with Craig offering to make one for us. Wow – what a wonderful surprise and great idea, making the new center of our back yard even more special.
During my birthday week-end in January, Craig and Ragnar cut the boards in his little workshop and we were able to fit the pieces in our car over the next 2 trips.

In February Ragnar enjoyed putting the table together in our back yard. When a few students saw it at our next Open House, they came up with an idea for the table’s debut. An Italian student who had been here studying English for a few weeks would soon be leaving. Could we barbecue in our back yard and inaugurate the table for his farewell party? They would bring the food and do the cooking. Sounded like a good plan to us! We’d be crazy to turn that down!

While the men were barbecuing the meat outside the ladies were getting salads ready in our kitchen.

I volunteered to help cut the onions, using my 'onion goggles'.

Ready to eat.

Although we had the table set and food ready – at the last minute the wind picked up and we decided to eat inside. What a fun evening – a house fill of young people – yummy food and I didn't even have to lift a finger. They brought the food and cleaned up. A great deal for us!!

We have used the table a few times since though and I know we will continue to be thankful for it many, many times this summer.
