Easter in the Faroes

We recently found ourselves walking around our peaceful home town in the Faroes - stores, banks, schools etc. closed for the Easter Holidays. We landed in the Faroes on Wednesday night and didn’t see any activity until the following Tuesday morning. Things close down longer for Easter than for Christmas.

However, activities in homes and churches make up for the quietness in the towns and villages. Friends and family gathered together in their homes, decorated with lots of yellow for ‘Christmas type’ dinners on Easter Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. Lots of yummy food and great family time.

Most of the churches also had special meetings planned for the long week-end. Ragnar was given the opportunity to share several times and we also were able to join a group of believers from many areas who gathered to worship in a Sports Center. In-between meetings and over the evening meal we had a wonderful opportunity to catch up with lots of people we seldom see. We are grateful that we were able to join our Faroese family and friends in thankfulness for Christ’s death and resurrection. We really have a wonderful reason to celebrate, don’t we? Christ arose!

Our 10 day visit flew by very quickly. We basically went to visit Ragnar’s mom and dad and spent most of our daylight hours with them, and in the evenings were spoiled by our friends’ hospitality. Each night we enjoyed time with a different family, never lacking for things to catch up on.

We also managed to squeeze in a meeting with the NTM Faroese Committee (planning a trip to the Philippines for next winter), 3 meetings with potential Associate Members, a visit with our next door Filipino neighbor and a few strolls in the park, enjoying the beautiful blue skies and warm weather. Doesn't our niece have a breath taking view from their home?

The variety of unique food is always intriguing - we were even invited out for a meal of Greenlandic reindeer. Our mouths were watering just at the thought of it, but unfortunately we were not able to take them up on it as other arrangements had already been made. Maybe we can take a rain check on it!! However, we were able to enjoy a meal of whale meat, another of boiled dried fish and to top that were given a few kilos of cod cheeks to bring home with us.My 88 year old mother in law amazes me. I often wonder if I live that long, will I still be frying fish for my family?
Soaking in the sun with my ‘little boy’?
Making coffee for visitors?

Ironing shirts for my husband?

Being rewarded with a big hug?

Aren’t they cute???

While we were there, word was received of a serious car accident in Zambia, where Ragnar’s cousin’s daughter lost her life. Although it was very difficult, Ragnar is thankful he could visit his cousin during this heart breaking time.

Sometimes having a few hour lay over in an airport can be rather pleasant. Ours was this time as were blessed by a lovely visit from soon to be parents, Jakup and Jancy Hoj. We are glad they live near the airport as we really enjoyed our time with them. That fun visit was followed by a sad good-bye - Ragnar and I split ways then - I continued my journey home to England, while he went on his way to Germany.

I’ll write about it soon.

Somehow I missed a few of your posts...but it was fun to catch up this morning. I liked your little section on your mother-in-law...she seems like a pretty special lady. :-) And I LOVED that picture at the end of that wonderful couple - so fun that you could meet up with them!
