Sailing around the Sea of Galilee in a wooden boat as the disciples did 2,000 years ago was a wonderful way to begin adventures for this day. I was trying to imagine what it would have been like for the disciples to look up and see Jesus walking on the water!!
During the ride they gave us a demo of how they cast the net in the water in Jesus time. They even tried casting it on the other side, but still didn’t catch anything.
When we docked at Kibbutz Lof Geon we saw the ‘Ancient Jesus Boat’ – the remains of a 2,000 year old boat that was discovered in 1986.
Mount of BeatitudesAt the top of the hill where Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount, we stood in a circle while Ragnar read the Beatitudes from Matthew.
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
As we walked around Banias (ancient Caesarea Philippi) it was pointed out to us where Jesus said, ‘On this rock I will build my church.’ Matt 16:13
Parts of the Temple of Pam and the Temple of Demius – goddess of vengeance are still there.
Lots of fig trees in this area.
On our way to the beautiful Golan Heights, we drove for several miles along the border of Lebanon.
Soon we were eating lunch in ‘St. Peter’s’ Restaurant, where we enjoyed ‘St. Peter’s’ fish!!
We stopped at the 2000 year old ruins of Capernaum, where Jesus spent did most of His Galilean ministry, where he performed many miracles.
We saw where Peter’s mother in law lived and where Jesus healed her.
A church is built above their home.
Our guide told us Jewish people have given the world 2 things – the Bible and Brunch. Peter’s mother in law served a meal after she was healed!
What is left of the ruins of the synagogue is fascinating.
The seat for the readers had arm rests.
Close by was the site of the Feeding of the 5,000 – what a day that must have been!! I walked down to at least put my feet in the Sea of Galilee.
