G is for Grass Roofs

The grass roofs are probably one of the first things tourists notice.  These have been a feature of the houses since the islands were first settled.

In the 'olden days' grass was often used for their roofs.  As with most things, styles often fade out and come in again years later.  It is 'in' again now and many modern homes, as well as museums or hotels, have beautiful turfed roofs.

Since grass is a living material, it insulates and protects plus requires very little maintenance.  It also follows the beautiful seasons of the year and paints itself: brown in the autumn, white in the winter, light green in the spring and lush green in the summer.

 
 

 
 I think they are charming, and if we were ever going to build a home in the Faroes, I would opt for that style.
