K is for Klaksvik

Klaksvik - our home town in the Faroes, where Ragnar grew up playing soccer with his friends, and where most of our relatives still live. 

 Located on one of the northernmost islands, it is the second largest town and the main industrial town in the Faroes.   

Beautiful both in the summer...

...and winter!!

With its wonderfully protected harbour, it seems natural that Klaksvik is the main fishing port in the Faroes.  The town is not only home to a sizable fishing fleet, but also to the largest fish processing plant.

  

My first few trips to the Faroes, we went to Klaksvik by ferry (now there is a tunnel).  Coming around the bend to this cute little town where the dwellings are beautifully spread on the hillsides around the well sheltered bay was always a welcome sight.

 
 
When the village first started, all the houses and stores were built near the water.  Now new roads are constantly being built up higher and higher on the mountain as space near the sea has been used up.

Originally four farms were spread out in this area.  In time they grew into four villages that finally merged into the current growing town of Klaksvik with it present population of 5,000.
